Matsushiro Imperial Headquarters, Zozan Underground Tunnels
A network of underground tunnels about 10 km in total length, dug in a rush from 1944, near the end of the Pacific War, to relocate the Imperial General Headquarters and government agencies in preparation for a final battle on the Japanese mainland. Its history includes the mobilization of many Korean laborers who were forced into harsh work. Only a small section is open to the public; wearing a helmet, you walk through dim tunnels of bare rock and are surrounded by the strange silence of a vast underground space that was left unfinished when the war ended.
