Liminal space · Nagano, Japan

Diamond Madarao

The remains of a white resort hotel along Prefectural Route 97 in the Madarao Highlands of Iiyama, Nagano. It opened in the mid-1980s with just over 70 guest rooms, tennis courts, a large communal bath and an open-air bath, and hosted skiers and students on training camps. It is said to have remained in business until around 2012. Today its railings and roof have been damaged by the weight of snow, and windows are broken in many places. It is private property, so please view it only from the road.
