Doai Station (Underground Platform and 462 Steps)

An unstaffed station on the JR Joetsu Line. The up platform is at ground level, but the down platform lies inside the Shin-Shimizu Tunnel, opened in 1967, about 70 m below the station building. From the ticket gate you descend 24 steps along a connecting passage and then a straight flight of 462 steps before finally reaching the platform. The stairway, lit by lamps at regular intervals, takes about 10 minutes to walk down, and the climb back up can take more than twice that. Only a few trains stop each day, so check the time of your return train before heading down.
