Former Himekawa Hospital

The remains of a large four-story hospital built in 1987 in Itoigawa, then an area short of medical services, with funding from local citizens. With 114 general beds, it served as a core of local healthcare, including rehabilitation after strokes, but revisions to medical fees and a shortage of doctors led it to go bankrupt in 2007 with debts of about 2.2 billion yen, and it closed. It mattered so much to the area that Himekawa Station is even said to have been opened with the hospital in mind. Since it closed, broken windows and graffiti have spread, and it stands slowly decaying in full view along the national highway.
