Kowada Station (Remote Station Where Three Prefectures Meet)

An unstaffed station on the JR Iida Line, beside the Tenryu River near the point where Shizuoka, Aichi and Nagano prefectures meet. It opened in 1936 as a station on the Sanshin Railway, but when Sakuma Dam was completed in 1956, part of the riverside settlement was submerged, and in time everyday life disappeared from the surrounding area. No road for cars leads to the station, and the nearest settlement is about an hour's walk away along a mountain path. The wooden station building remains, along with the ruins of houses and a tea factory.
