Tamoto Station (Cliffside Station on the Tenryu River)

An unstaffed station on the JR Iida Line, set partway up a cliff in the Tenryu River gorge. A huge concrete retaining wall towers behind the platform, and beneath the tracks the ground drops into the valley. There is no station building, only a small shelter on the platform. It cannot be reached by car; from beside the tunnel, a narrow mountain path climbs for about 20 minutes to the nearest village. It opened in 1935 as a stop on the Sanshin Railway. Some local trains pass through without stopping, so check the timetable before getting off here.
