Sasamado Power Station

The remains of a hydroelectric power plant in Sasamado, Kawane-cho, Shimada, standing in a tea field on the far side of a sweeping bend of the Oi River. It began operating in 1931 as a power plant for the paper company Tokai Shiryo (later Tokai Pulp), later passed to Chubu Electric Power, and was decommissioned in 1961. Its ivy-covered concrete building stands on the sloping tea field as if cut off from the surrounding villages. It can only be reached by crossing the river, and since it is private property that is still being managed, please view it only from the opposite bank.
