Liminal space · Nagasaki, Japan

Ikeshima Coal Mine Housing, Building 17

One of the apartment blocks on Ikeshima where coal-mining families lived until the mine closed in 2001. A remnant of the coal-mining town that once supported most of the island's population, its concrete walls are covered with ivy and weeds, and even the balcony railings are buried in green. The abandoned blocks lined up on high ground overlooking the sea let you imagine the bustle of the past, yet now they simply stand in quiet decay, and the whole island has the air of a museum where time has stopped.
