Hashima (Gunkanjima)
An island off Nagasaki Port that was once an undersea coal mining facility, called "Gunkanjima" (Battleship Island) because of its silhouette lined with high-rise buildings. When the mine closed in 1974, all of its residents left and it became uninhabited. The schools and housing where people once lived have been left to decay, giving off a mysterious atmosphere as if time had stopped, and it has drawn attention from around the world as a liminal space.
