Liminal space · Nagasaki, Japan

Ikeshima

Ikeshima once thrived as a coal-mining island, but after the mine closed its population fell sharply, and many apartment blocks now stand empty across the island. Spaces that still hold traces of everyday life, slowly being taken over by nature, give the island a distinctly liminal atmosphere. People still live on the island, so please be considerate and mind your manners when you visit.
