Ikeshima Coal Mine Coal Preparation Plant Ruins
The remains of the coal preparation plant of the Ikeshima Coal Mine, an undersea mine that operated as the last coal mine in Kyushu. After the mine closed in 2001 (Heisei 13), the facilities were left on the island as they were, and rusted corrugated roofs, pipes, and coal-washing machinery spread across the slope facing the sea, piled one upon another. Seen from the air, the complex structure looks like a single giant machine, giving it a strange presence as an industrial heritage site frozen in time.
