Manda Pit
A component of a World Cultural Heritage site, where a group of Meiji-era coal mine buildings survives almost as it was. The red-brick winding engine house and a huge headframe stand quietly in an open yard, steeped in the taut stillness peculiar to industrial facilities that have stopped working. As a well-maintained historic site, it is also easy to visit.
