Tenjin Underground Shopping Street
An underground shopping street running about 590 meters beneath Tenjin in Fukuoka, opened in 1976. Inspired by 19th-century Europe, it has cobblestone-style floors and ironwork ceilings with arabesque patterns, and the lighting in the passages is deliberately kept dim. Before the shops open or after they close, the empty passages look like the alleys of a town that exists nowhere.
