Wakato Ferry

A small ferry that links Wakamatsu and Tobata across Dokai Bay in Kitakyushu, a one-way trip of about three minutes. It has run since the Meiji era, and even after the Wakato Bridge was built directly overhead in 1962, service continued at the request of local residents. The sight of the little boat crossing back and forth beneath the huge red bridge, together with the old ferry landings, carries an air of having drifted slightly out of step with the times.
