Liminal space · Fukuoka, Japan

Kanmon Tunnel Pedestrian Walkway

A tunnel for people on foot that links Honshu and Kyushu beneath the sea. It opened in 1958, at the same time as the road tunnel. Take the elevator down about 60 meters, and a fluorescent-lit passage about 780 meters long stretches ahead so straight that its end is out of sight. Partway along, a line on the floor marks the border between Fukuoka and Yamaguchi prefectures, and at times when few people pass, the quiet of a space built purely for getting from one side to the other becomes all the more striking.
