Former Shime Coal Mine Shaft Tower
A reinforced concrete shaft tower built by the former Imperial Japanese Navy as the pithead of a coal mine. It is the only prewar tower-type winding tower left in Japan, and one of only three remaining in the world. The rugged mass of concrete rises abruptly from a residential neighborhood with a strange presence. The surrounding area has been landscaped as a green park, and the contrast of a huge military and industrial ruin left standing alone amid an everyday scene gives it a peculiar sense of unreality.
