Liminal space · Kumamoto, Japan

Seaside Hotel Sankaikan (Closed)

The remains of a ryokan in Yunoko Onsen, Minamata, Kumamoto, which advertised its 30-meter cave bath as "the best cave bath in Japan." With 71 rooms it was one of the largest inns in the hot spring town, but it ceased operations in April 2015. It still stands by the sea in its unusual form: a five-story wooden old wing, said to have been built in the 1950s, sandwiched between high-rise wings on both sides. Ivy has crept over it, and the roof has begun to sag. There are no-entry signs and security cameras at the entrance, so please view it only from nearby places such as the neighboring Yunoko Onsen Park.
