Maehama Aircraft Shelters

Wartime remains scattered across the farmland of Maehama in Nankoku, Kochi, south of Kochi Ryoma Airport. They are semi-cylindrical concrete hangars built during the Pacific War to protect aircraft of the Kochi Naval Air Base from air raids. There were once 41 of them, large and small; seven remain today, and they were designated a historic site of Nankoku City in 2006. Shelter No. 1 still bears bullet holes from strafing by US aircraft, and the largest, No. 4, is 44 m wide. Some are used as storehouses by farmers, so please do not enter the fields or property and view them from the road.
