Former Okawa Village Office (Submerged by Sameura Dam)
The former village office of Okawa, Kochi, which lies at the bottom of the Sameura Dam reservoir. The village, which opposed the dam, is said to have built a reinforced concrete office in Funato, its central district that was slated to be flooded. When the dam was completed in the 1970s, the building sank into the lake along with the village center and its main settlements. It is normally hidden, but it emerges when drought sharply lowers the reservoir, and during the summer 2026 drought it reappeared down to its first-floor entrance for the first time in more than a decade. The lakebed is off limits, so please view it from the lakeside road or similar spots. Please also keep in mind that for former residents, this is part of their home.
