Toganari District, Former Besshi Copper Mine
The remains of a mining headquarters spread across the mountainside of the Besshi Copper Mine, sometimes called the "Machu Picchu of the East." The mining headquarters was located here from the Taisho era into the early Showa era, and the area thrived as a mountain town until 1968. It was then left deserted in the mountains, and red-brick and stone structures such as ore storage bins and an incline are layered across the steep slopes. On mornings wrapped in thick fog, the scene can feel dreamlike, recalling an ancient ruin in South America.
