Nippon Tokushu Kokan Ominato Plant (Bat Mansion)
The ruins of a smelting plant in the woods near Mutsu Bay in Ominato, Mutsu, Aomori. Nippon Tokushu Kokan opened it in 1938 to make iron from iron sand gathered on the Shimokita Peninsula, but production fell short of plans. It was handed over to the navy in 1943 and appears to have been left unused after the war. Its large, crumbling concrete buildings and chimney are buried among the trees, and because many bats live inside, it is also known as "Komori Yashiki" (the Bat Mansion). The structure is steadily collapsing, so please do not go inside and view it only from outside.
