Submerged Forest of Lake Shirakawa

A submerged forest that appears only in spring on the reservoir of Shirakawa Dam in Iide, Yamagata. A grove of white willows that normally stands on dry land is flooded partway up the trunks from late March to mid-May, when snowmelt fills the reservoir. On windless mornings the trees are mirrored on the surface, and the line between water and sky disappears. When the water level is lowered to prepare for summer floods, the trees return to dry land. Canoe tours that paddle through the forest are also available. Park in the lakeside park's parking lot, not on the road.
