Sendai Mediatheque
A public facility on Jozenji-dori in Sendai, opened in 2001. Designed by Toyo Ito, its floors are held up only by 13 steel tubes that waver like seaweed. Seen through the glass, the stacked floors float above the street at night like a glowing aquarium. Anyone can come in for free until late in the evening, and on the quieter floors, wide spaces with no fixed purpose stretch out in silence.
