Liminal space · Fukushima, Japan

Aizu Sazaedo (Entsu Sansodo)

A hexagonal, three-story wooden hall 16.5 m tall, built in 1796. Inside, a double-helix ramp keeps the way up separate from the way down, and because it is one-way, you never pass other visitors. After spiraling up and back down, you find yourself leaving from a different spot than where you entered. A building with a curious route, made more than 200 years ago.
