Former Higashiyama Tunnel (Kazan-do)

Kazan-do (Kazan Tunnel) opened in 1903 (Meiji 36) as a road tunnel on the Shibutani Kaido, and has remained as a pedestrian tunnel since a new tunnel was built for National Route 1. Its brick portals are covered in moss, fallen leaves carpet the inside, and it is wrapped in dense trees. It is preserved so that pedestrians and cyclists can pass through, and in the quiet there is a feeling of standing at the entrance to another world.
