Capsule Inn Osaka (New Japan Umeda)
The world's first practical capsule hotel, designed by Kisho Kurokawa and opened in 1979. It is still in business today and has welcomed guests across three eras: Showa, Heisei and Reiwa. The corridors lined with stacked capsules form an unreal, uniform space where identical private pods continue on and on, and the late-night lobby and dim passages between the capsules carry a peculiar floating feeling, cut off from everyday life. An architecturally important liminal space that is still in active use.
