Donzurubo Underground Bunker

An underground bunker dug beneath Donzurubo in Kashiba, Nara, where white tuff rock surfaces roll on like waves. In the summer of 1945, the army dug it as a combat command post for the General Air Army, in preparation for a decisive battle on the Japanese mainland. The tunnels are divided into two systems, with a total length said to be about 2 km. Since 1967, part of it has been used by Kyoto University as an observatory for crustal movement. There is a risk of collapse and entry is prohibited, so please only look at the entrance from outside and visit the interior when a guided viewing event is held.
