Shakunage Gakko (Former Kaigake Elementary School)

The wooden building of the former Kaigake Elementary School in Kaigake, Hino, Shiga, built in 1930. After the school closed in 2001, a local nonprofit has preserved it as "Shakunage Gakko" (Rhododendron School) and opened it to the public. As you walk through classrooms with faded blackboards, old desks and textbooks from the period, the only sound echoing down the hall is the creak of the wooden floor. It has also been a filming location for many TV dramas. It is open on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10:00 to 16:00 and closed on weekdays. A contribution of 300 yen toward its upkeep is required.
