Liminal space · Shiga / Fukui, Japan

Yanagase Tunnel

A tunnel through the border between Shiga and Fukui prefectures, opened in 1884 (Meiji 17) as a railway tunnel on the old Hokuriku Line and later converted for road use. It is over 1 km long, with little lighting inside, and so narrow that only one car can pass at a time, so traffic lights at both entrances control alternating one-way traffic. Walls that mix concrete with bare rock, damp air, and the small light of the exit far ahead create a closed-in feeling; long before its reputation as a haunted spot, it already has an unusual presence simply as a road tunnel. When driving through, pay close attention to oncoming traffic and the timing of the signals.
