Liminal space · Hokkaido, Japan

Historical Village of Hokkaido

An open-air museum where buildings from Hokkaido, dating from the Meiji era to the early Showa era, have been relocated or reconstructed and set out side by side. It opened in 1983, and 52 buildings stand on its grounds of about 54 hectares. No one lives on the streets lined with a town office, shops, and a station building, and only the tracks of a horse-drawn railway run straight ahead. On quiet days, the whole townscape looks like a stage set cut off from its own time.
