Beppu Onsen Hoyoland (Mud Baths)
A mud-bath hot spring in the mountains of the Myoban Onsen area, drawing its mud from Konya Jigoku, which is said to have been recorded long ago in a fudoki, one of Japan's ancient provincial chronicles. Bluish-white mud bubbling and popping as it wells up is a sight that hardly seems of this world. Steam hangs over the mountainside, and you feel as if you have stepped into another world right beside everyday life. This genuine mud bath, created by the earth's natural geothermal energy, has also drawn attention on social media as an otherworldly, liminal space.
