Suriko Power Station (Power Station in a Lake)

The remains of an early Showa-era hydroelectric power station standing in the reservoir of Nanairo Dam, with the lower half of the building underwater. It was built in 1931 on the Kitayama River in Shimokitayama, Nara, and generated power with water carried through a tunnel from upstream. Later, Nanairo Dam was built downstream, the river became a lake, and the building was left standing in the water. Now only the upper floor with its row of windows shows above the surface, and the building looks stranded in the middle of the still lake. Entry to the building has been prohibited since 2018, so please view it only from a distance.
