Shima Mediterranean Village
A resort village recreating a Mediterranean fishing village, with white-walled, terracotta-roofed buildings crowded onto a hillside overlooking Ago Bay. It has been open since 1993, and gives you the illusion of strolling through a Greek or Spanish harbor town without leaving Japan. Cobblestone slopes, blue doors and towers modeled on bell towers are packed together into a scene that hardly seems to belong to a real Japanese coastline, and the sense of unreality is strongest at dusk, when the visitors thin out.
