Kintetsu Uji-Yamada Station

Kintetsu's Uji-Yamada Station, opened in 1931 as the gateway to Ise. Designed by Setsu Kuno, its 128-meter-wide facade is clad in cream-colored terracotta tiles, and the roof is topped with Spanish tiles. It is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan and is still in use as a station. At night, after the waves of pilgrims to Ise have ebbed, the high-ceilinged concourse holds a stillness in which you lose track of what era it is.
