Liminal space · Tokyo, Japan

Rosa Kaikan

A multi-tenant building on the west side of Ikebukuro that strongly preserves the atmosphere of the 1970s. It opened in 1968 as an all-round entertainment building, and a movie theater (Cinema Rosa), a bowling alley, a game arcade, a live music venue, and restaurants still operate inside. The interior is marked by the dim lighting and tangled corridors typical of Showa-era amusement buildings, and the stairs leading underground and the retro lettering on its signs create a distinctive mood. Often introduced on social media as "retro" or "otherworldly," it is a space that seems left behind by time, a liminal space where you can feel outside the everyday right in the middle of the city.
