Kirigaoka Central Shopping Street
A shopping street inside a housing estate that keeps a strong flavor of the Showa era, hard to believe within Tokyo's 23 wards. It lies at the heart of the Toei Kirigaoka housing estate, with old-fashioned independent shops lined up under the wavy roof of an arcade. In recent years empty shops have become noticeable, and even on weekday afternoons there are few people about, leaving a stillness as if time had stopped. Though close to central Tokyo, it has an odd, floating feel, as if you had wandered into another era, and it has reportedly been used as a music video location. The shopping street's cooperative was dissolved in March 2025, and a new commercial facility is planned on the neighboring land as the estate is rebuilt. Because it sits inside a public housing estate where people still live, please take care not to capture homes or residents when taking photos.
