Liminal space · Tokyo, Japan

Shiodome Sio-Site Underground Walkway

An underground passage spreading beneath the vast pedestrian deck that links Shimbashi Station with the high-rise towers of Shiodome. In contrast to the glass skyscrapers above, it has an impersonal atmosphere of concrete and artificial light. People do pass through, yet the bustle above ground feels strangely far away, and at certain times of day only a few figures can be seen. Although it is a rational space designed for an office district, its featureless junctions and narrow corridors combine to create an unreal atmosphere. It has drawn attention on social media as a liminal space hidden in the everyday life of a central Tokyo business district.
