Liminal space · Aichi, Japan

Nagoya City Archives (Former Nagoya Court of Appeals)

A red-brick building built as a courthouse in 1922 and designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It served as a court until 1979 and is now open to the public free of charge as the Nagoya City Archives. A central staircase of marble and stained glass, a reconstructed courtroom, and long corridors lined with identical doors. On quiet weekdays, only the stillness of a building whose work is done fills the halls.
