Liminal space · Okayama, Japan

Former Oji Arcadia Resort Hotel

An unfinished hotel on Mt. Ojigatake in Tamano, Okayama, with seven floors above ground and two below. It was the first project under a national program to build facilities in national and quasi-national parks, funded with about 4 billion yen in government loans under the Resort Act, and the building was completed in 1993. But after the bubble economy collapsed, money for the interior work could not be raised, and it was abandoned without ever receiving a single guest. In 2006 it was sold at auction into private hands. Its windows have been smashed and it is covered in graffiti. The site is off-limits and barricaded, so please view it only from the rooftop observation deck of the Ojigatake rest house.
