Liminal space · Okinawa, Japan

Koza Ichibangai (Chuo Ichibangai)

A covered shopping street about 300 meters long in the Koza area of Okinawa City. In the mid-1970s it became the first street in Okinawa to get an arcade roof, and in the 1960s and 70s it was the busiest commercial district in central Okinawa. From the 1990s onward, closed shops became more and more noticeable, and today new businesses alternate with shuttered storefronts. The quiet under the long roof feels like an echo of its livelier days.
