Bank of Japan Otaru Museum
A Bank of Japan branch built in 1912 in Ironai, Otaru, an area once lined with banks and known as the "Wall Street of the North." It was designed by Nagano Uheiji and Okada Shinichiro under the guidance of Tatsuno Kingo. After the branch closed in 2002, it opened to the public free of charge as a museum of currency and finance. The former banking hall with its high open ceiling and the massive vault door remain inside, and the building holds the quiet of a bank whose work is done.
