Aldwych (Disused Underground Station)
A station on the Strand in London that was the terminus of a short branch of the Piccadilly line. It opened in 1907 as Strand station, never attracted many passengers, and closed in 1994 because replacing its old lifts was judged not worth the cost. During the Second World War it served as an air-raid shelter where many people spent the night, and items from the British Museum's collection were moved to safety in nearby tunnels. Today its doors open only for filming and for London Transport Museum's 'Hidden London' tours. On platforms where no trains arrive, old tiles and silence remain.
