Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel ("Underground Temple")

The Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel, one of the largest underground floodwater channels in the world. In its huge surge tank, 22 m below ground, 59 pillars, each 18 m tall and weighing 500 tons, stand in rows, and this solemn sight has earned it the name "Underground Temple." It is a national flood control facility that drains water from the surrounding rivers into the Edo River during typhoons and other heavy rain.
