Tsukuba Center Plaza

The plaza of the Tsukuba Center Building, completed in 1983 at the heart of Tsukuba Science City. Designed by Arata Isozaki, it inverts Rome's Piazza del Campidoglio: an oval plaza sunk a level below its surroundings, with a fountain at its center. Enclosed by stone steps and walls, the plaza turns very still on weekday mornings without events or on rainy nights, as if you had been left alone on a stage prepared for someone else.
