Lai Tak Tsuen, Inside the Cylindrical Blocks

A public housing estate in Tai Hang on Hong Kong Island, completed between 1975 and 1976. Two of its three blocks are cylindrical, said to be the only such form among Hong Kong's public rental housing. Circular corridors run around a central courtyard on every floor, and when you look straight up, the same railings and doors are stacked in rings all the way to the sky. It is a space where the sense of up and down fades and only inside and outside remain. Many people still live here, and the entrances have code-locked gates; non-residents are refused entry and photography. Do not enter without permission, and please be considerate of the residents' daily lives.
