Monster Building, Quarry Bay: Yick Cheong Building Courtyard

A residential complex in Quarry Bay, Hong Kong, made up of five buildings including Yick Cheong Building and Montane Mansion. Built in the 1960s, the blocks are joined in an E shape around long, narrow courtyards. The windows, air conditioners and laundry of about 2,200 flats cover every wall, and looking up, the sky shrinks to a thin strip. Step into the courtyard and the street noise fades, leaving only the sounds of daily life drifting down from above. Appearances in films brought a rise in visitors coming to take photos, and in 2018 signs went up prohibiting unauthorized photography. Some 10,000 people live here, so please take care not to disturb the residents.
