Haboro Midori no Mura (Taiyo Elementary School)

The remains of Taiyo Elementary School, standing in the mountains of Haboro, Hokkaido, on the site of the former Haboro coal mine. The school opened in 1940, and in 1962 it gained an unusual circular gymnasium 32.7 meters across. After the mine shut down, the school closed in 1971; from 1982 it served as the town's lodging facility, Midori no Mura ('Green Village'), until that too closed in 2001. The well-known round gym collapsed under the weight of snow in March 2018, and today the three-story reinforced concrete school building and the wreckage of the gym remain. The bridge leading to the school has been blocked to vehicles, and bears live in the area, so please keep your distance and view it only from the road.
