Horonuka Elementary School Naka-Horonuka Branch

The remains of a small wooden school, reached by heading north on Hokkaido Road 550 from Horonuka in Rumoi. It began as Naka-Horonuka Elementary School, which opened in 1905; as the number of pupils fell it became a branch of Horonuka Elementary School in 1971, and it closed in 1983. When it closed, there was reportedly just one teacher and one pupil. The gymnasium has collapsed, but the schoolhouse and the teachers' housing remain beside the road. The classroom ceilings have fallen in and the walls are crumbling, so please do not approach the buildings and view them only from the road.
