Sewoon Sangga, Elevated Walkway
A row of commercial buildings stretching about a kilometer through central Seoul, from Jongno to Toegye-ro. Based on a concept by Kim Swoo-geun, eight buildings were built between 1967 and 1968, and seven remain today. It was once a major market for electronic components, but trade shifted to Yongsan in the late 1980s, and today shuttered units and small workshops sit side by side. Elevated walkways on the third floor connect the buildings, and as the corridors of identical width go on, you lose track of which building you are in. The Seoul city government plans to remove the walkways in stages from 2026, so the sections open to walk through may change.
