Liminal space · Ibaraki, Japan

Former Hachiri Post Office

A former post office building in a hamlet in the mountains of Hitachiomiya, Ibaraki. Because the sign under the eaves, reading "Hachiri Post Office," is written from right to left, it appears to date from before the war. It went out of use around 1991, when a new post office was built next door. The pink wooden walls, decorative window frames, and a vent shaped like the postal mark at the top of the facade still remain, and a statue of Ninomiya Kinjiro stands to one side. The ceiling and other parts are collapsing. The current Hachiri Post Office operates right next door, so please do not enter the grounds and only look from outside, so as not to disturb its customers.
